When I saw Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart were doing a play together I knew I had to try and get tickets for it. I was even happier to see it was coming to Sheffield and had a couple of other tour dates prior to transferring to London. When I went to book I ended up getting almost the last 2 seats in the theatre for a midweek performance, I think it’s safe to say I am not alone in wanting to see two of the greatest actors around practising their art.
No Man’s Land is a play by Harold Pinter looking at what happens when unexpected guests go round to a house, or at least I think that’s what it was. In all honesty it was one of those shows that I spent the whole time clueless as to what on earth was going on. There were some funny bits but I have no idea how they fit into the narrative.
The two main actors were joined on stage by Owen Teale and Damien Molony. It was a masterclass in acting from all four thespians. Even from our seats up in the gods I could see all facial expressions and catch all the nuances in speech to gauge the characters emotions throughout, even if I didn’t follow the meaning of all the words.
The set is a simple drawing room that stays constant through the play however lighting is used effectively to help create the mood.
Whilst overall it wasn’t my favourite thing I’ve ever seen on stage it was a joy to see two talents I admire greatly in action. After its short tour, No Man’s Land transfers to the Wyndham Theatre in London and I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates brilliant acting from two heavyweights of the trade.
Have you ever seen any particular heroes perform on stage or in any arena? Have you seen No Man’s Land? What did you make of it?
